Event Description
LGBTQIA+ youth are often classified as a homogeneous group, but the diversity among and within them is more distinct than many people realize. While differences in sexual orientation, gender diversity, and lived experience may at times divide them, as a group, they experience a disproportionate amount of adversity secondary to minority stress and at times parental rejection resulting in mental health concerns, increased truancy, and decreased academic achievement. While there has been a significant uptick in political pressures and the resulting fear and loss of autonomy and rights at the state level across the country, the change in political power at the start of 2025 has ushered in a slew of federal Executive Orders and threat of rights reversals. This 3-hour workshop will provide an overview of LGBTQIA+ youth, a discussion of the socio-political landscape, and tips and techniques for supporting queer and trans youth during times of adversity.
Participants will:
1. Develop an understanding of sexuality, gender identity, gender expression, and intersectionality
2. Understand the federal landscape and state-level laws and proposed policies
3. Develop skills for supporting LGBTQIA+ youth during challenging times
4. Feel empowered by recognizing what school psychologists and educators CAN do rather than focusing on what they CAN'T do.
Amy Cannava, Ed.S., NCSP, is in her 24th year of practice as a school psychologist and the recipient of the 2019 and 2023 NASP Presidential Award in recognition of Exceptional Service to Children and School Psychology. For the last 15 years she has specialized in LGBTQIA+ youth which resulted in her being appointed as the Chair of NASP’s LGBTQI2-S Committee. Amy is a recognized and frequently requested speaker at local and national conferences. She has authored book chapters for NASP on LGBTQIA+ youth, worked with The Trevor Project, GLSEN, Gender Spectrum, HRC, PBS Frontline, HBO, and Project Thrive representing NASP. A former crisis counselor for The Trevor Project, Amy remains inspired and appropriately challenged by the youth she serves who motivate her to continue bettering the world.
