Title:  Consultation Beyond Grad School: Making Time and Sustaining the Work in Real Practice

Session Description:
This advanced practitioner session invites participants to examine how the formal consultation models learned in graduate training compare with the realities of their current practice. The discussion will highlight common barriers to implementing best-practice consultation and explore case examples illustrating how consultation can be aligned with the broader roles and functions of school psychologists. The session will conclude with practical strategies for managing time and integrating more formal consultation services into everyday practice.

Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Differentiate between formal consultation models taught in graduate training and the consultation practices commonly used in school settings.
  • Identify systemic, organizational, and role-related barriers that limit the use of best-practice consultation.
  • Analyze case examples illustrating how consultation can be integrated with other core functions of school psychologists.
  • Apply practical strategies for managing time, aligning efforts, and increasing the use of formal consultation within their current practice.
  • Develop individualized action steps for strengthening and sustaining consultation efforts in their own settings

Brief Presenter Bio
Dr. Lauren T. Kaiser, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at Towson University, in the graduate School Psychology Program. Her work spans school consultation, intervention practices, and implementation science. She has presented nationally and published eight peer-reviewed articles centering on school-based consultation. Dr. Kaiser was the invited lead author for chapters on Instructional Consultation for both the NASP Best Practices in School Psychology VII and the Handbook of Research in School Consultation, Third Edition. She co-authored the textbook, Case Studies in School Psychology: Applying Standards for Professional Practice. In addition to her scholarship, Dr. Kaiser has held leadership roles in ASPP, MSPA, and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association. She was recently recognized as the Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation’s Reviewer of the Year for 2025–2026. As a former elementary education teacher, Dr. Kaiser is committed to enhancing collaborative problem-solving resources for teachers to improve educational outcomes for all.
